• Heating element: At the core is a nichrome (nickel-chromium) resistance wire, which produces heat as electric current passes through it. The wire is typically wound into a helical coil.
• Insulation: The nichrome wire is strung through specially designed ceramic insulators, which support and insulate the heating element.
• Insulating powder: High-purity magnesium oxide (MgO) powder is used to fill the remaining voids around the ceramic insulators. This provides excellent thermal conductivity and dielectric strength.
• Sheath: The entire assembly is enclosed in a metal sheath, commonly made of type 304 stainless steel. This sheath provides physical protection, corrosion resistance, and good thermal conductivity.
• Terminations: A variety of termination options are available, such as screw terminals for high-amperage applications or flexible lead wires for easier installation.
• Fins (optional): Some versions feature fins attached to the sheath to increase the surface area for more efficient heat transfer in air-heating applications.
